Religious Education

The parish is the center of faith formation for Catholics. Every person in your pews, every Catholic in your parish community…child or adult…is on their own journey toward Christ and a life of discipleship.

Religious Education Classes Grades Pre K-8

Classes begin in late September and end the last Sunday in April. We begin on Sunday at 1:30pm with family Faith Formation in the gym and then at 2pm we break off into our classrooms until 3pm. This is each of the  individual grades classroom time. Grades Pre-K thru 8th grade.
Grades 6-8th is Jr High School, they are together in the Upper Room working and learning in group and individual study.
We also have Catechesis of The Good Shepherd lessons for the Pre-K, three and four year olds. This is a beautiful lesson plan to teach the littles all about Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, as well as God and the Saints.
The High School, grades 9-10, meet later at 4pm.  They learn in a group and individual study environment. They meet in the Upper Room with adult leaders to be their group guides.

Sacrament Preparation for 1st Communion & 1st Penance

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is usually received by a child for the first time when he/she is in the second grade. Parents are the primary teachers of their children in matters of faith.

The parents and child would participate fully in the formation program for the preparation of this sacrament. Occasionally they should check with the teacher for information to see how they can help in their child’s preparation.

A child usually receives the Sacrament of First Holy Communion also in the second grade. The first requirement is that the child has received sufficient preparation to understand the importance of this event and has developed a reverence and respect for this sacrament. Also that he or she has received the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  While the pastor and religious education staff will help, it is the responsibility of the parent to ensure that the child is made ready for First Communion. Parents are required to fully participate in the First Communion formation program. Occasionally they should check with the teacher for information to see how they can help in their child’s preparation.

Sacrament of Confirmation Classes

Confirmation is the sacrament in which, through the laying on of hands, anointing with chrism and prayer, those already baptized are strengthened by the Holy Spirit in order that they may profess the faith and faithfully live up to their profession.  They are enriched with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and are more closely linked to the Church. Those individuals desiring the sacrament of Confirmation must have reached the age of 16, be in the 11th grade or above, be enrolled in the parish faith formation program, have a history of continuous faith formation and a personal desire for this sacrament. We meet at 4pm on Sundays for faith formation in the Lumen Christi School.
